Background of the Study
Academic advising is an essential aspect of student support services in higher education. It provides students with guidance on course selection, career planning, and personal development, which are crucial for their academic success and future careers (Michele & Olamide, 2024). In nursing education, academic advising can play a significant role in helping students navigate the demands of the curriculum, identify their professional interests, and make informed decisions about their career paths (Ajayi & Suleiman, 2024).
At Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, academic advising is offered to nursing students as part of their educational experience. However, there is limited research on how academic advising influences nursing students' career decisions, particularly in terms of specialty choices, employment opportunities, and postgraduate education. This study seeks to examine the influence of academic advising on nursing students' career pathways and assess the effectiveness of the advising process.
Statement of the Problem
While academic advising is intended to help nursing students make informed decisions about their career paths, there is insufficient research on how effective advising is in shaping students' career choices at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences. Students may lack the necessary guidance or may not fully utilize advising services, which could result in unclear career direction or suboptimal career decisions. This study aims to investigate the impact of academic advising on nursing students' career pathways and identify ways to improve the advising process.
